How to Choose a Carbon Fiber OEM Manufacturer in China: A Checklist for Water Sports Brands
Choosing a manufacturing partner is one of the biggest decisions a water sports brand makes. The right carbon fiber factory helps you launch on time with consistent quality. The wrong one can mean delayed seasons, inconsistent parts and warranty problems.
Whether you are developing your first hydrofoil, a new paddle line or a custom carbon component, these are the questions worth asking before you commit.
1. Do they make the molds in-house?
Carbon parts are only as accurate as the molds they are cured in. A factory that machines its own molds can control tooling quality, adjust designs faster during development and maintain tools during production. Ask who makes the molds, what equipment is used and how mold changes are handled.
2. Does their process match your product?
Prepreg with hot-press molding, vacuum infusion and wet layup each suit different products. A foil mast and a large board shell have very different needs. Ask which process the factory would use for your part and why. Our article on prepreg vs wet layup explains the main differences.
3. How is quality controlled?
Ask what is checked, when and against what. Good answers mention inspection against your drawings, checks on critical dimensions and mounting interfaces, surface inspection and records for each batch. A certified quality management system such as ISO 9001 shows that processes are documented and audited.
4. How do samples and development work?
Most projects go through prototypes and pre-production samples before mass production. Ask how many sample rounds are typical, how feedback is handled, and whether samples are made with the same molds, materials and process as production parts.
5. Is there real engineering support?
A good OEM partner does more than follow a drawing. They should be able to discuss layup, manufacturability, wall thickness, inserts and finishing, and point out risks before tooling is made. Pay attention to how clearly and quickly technical questions are answered during the quoting stage.
6. How is your intellectual property protected?
Your designs are your business. Ask whether the factory will sign an NDA, how your files and molds are stored, and confirm in writing that your molds and designs will only be used for your orders.
7. Capacity, communication and export experience
- Can the factory handle both small sample runs and your expected production volumes?
- Is there a dedicated contact who communicates clearly in English?
- Do they have experience packing and shipping fragile carbon parts overseas?
- Can they work with your logo, packaging and labeling requirements?
8. Verify the factory
Ask for photos and videos of the actual workshop, or arrange a video call or factory visit. A real manufacturer will be able to show you the cutting area, molds, layup, presses and inspection, not just finished products.
Red flags to watch for
- Prices far below every other quote, with no explanation of materials or process
- Vague answers about who makes the molds or where parts are produced
- No questions back to you about loads, tolerances or finish
- Unwillingness to share workshop photos or sign an NDA
