What to Include in a Carbon Fiber Parts RFQ: Foil Boards, Paddles, Wing Booms and Custom Parts
A clear request for quotation (RFQ) saves weeks. When a manufacturer has the right information at the start, you get an accurate price, a realistic timeline and fewer surprises during sampling. When key details are missing, quotes are based on assumptions, and those assumptions often change the price later.
Use this checklist when you request a quote for carbon fiber water sports equipment or custom carbon parts.
1. Files and drawings
- 3D model in STEP or IGES format
- 2D drawings showing critical dimensions, tolerances and mounting interfaces
- Reference photos or samples if you are improving an existing product
If you only have a sketch or an idea, that is a fine place to start. Say so in your RFQ and the manufacturer can advise on the next steps.
2. Performance targets
- Target weight for the finished part
- Stiffness or flex expectations, for example compared with an existing product
- How the part is used and loaded: riding style, rider weight range, impact risk
- Any existing layup or material specification you want to keep
3. Material and construction
Tell the manufacturer if you have preferences for fiber type, cosmetic weave such as 3K twill or plain weave, unidirectional reinforcement, or core materials. If you do not, describe your goals and ask for a recommendation.
4. Surface finish and branding
- Gloss, matte or satin finish
- Visible carbon weave or painted surface
- Logo method: printed, painted or laid under the clear coat
- Colors and any Pantone references

5. Hardware and inserts
List any threaded inserts, track boxes, bolts, handles, grips or fittings, and say whether the factory should source them or you will supply them. Their positions should be shown on the drawing.
6. Quantities and timeline
- Number of samples or prototypes
- Quantity for the first production order
- Expected annual volume
- Your target launch date or season
Quantities have a big effect on price because molds and setup are shared across the number of parts produced.
7. Testing, packaging and shipping
Note any testing you require, how parts should be packed (individual bags, foam, branded boxes), and your preferred shipping terms and destination.
Product-specific notes
Foil boards
Include the board volume and outline, the foil track or mounting system, deck pad and strap insert positions, and whether you need a full carbon construction or a carbon shell over a core.
Paddles
Specify the paddle type (SUP, prone, kayak), blade size and shape, shaft length and diameter, whether the shaft is fixed or adjustable, and the handle style.
Wing booms
Share the boom length and diameter, the attachment system to the wing, grip material and any adjustability requirements.
Custom carbon fiber parts, tubes and plates
For tubes, give inner and outer diameter, length and wall thickness. For plates, give thickness, size and any cut shapes or holes. For other parts, the application and the loads involved help the manufacturer suggest the right construction.
A simple RFQ template
- Product and application
- Attached files (3D and 2D)
- Target weight and performance
- Material and construction preferences
- Finish, colors and logo
- Hardware and inserts
- Quantities: samples, first order, annual volume
- Timeline and destination
